Hi, this is Kaye from Malaysia. I just bought my N82 on Feb 2, 2008. It was great until I find today that the right selection key and the cancel (C) key start to creak when I pressed on them. This phone is less than a month and now it is starting to creak on me. This is pretty annoying on my part.

Do you think I could ask the dealer to rectify this problem for me, or even to the more extreme solution, to change the phone for me? What do you think is the problem behind the creaking sound?

Finally, I have downloaded some themes onto my phone and I find out that I could not delete them when I wanted to. Do you think there is another way of deleting the installed themes without having to reformat the whole thing?

Thanks.

You could reach me at kys1102@hotmail.com

Hi Kaye,
I know that the creaking problem you speak of is a new problem arising with a lot of people's N82 after about a month of use. I haven't experienced it yet, luckily. Your phone should have a 1 year warranty on it, so I would contact Nokia or the dealer you got it from and have it replaced, as it seems to be a defect.

As for the unwanted themes, are they installed on the Phone or Memory Card. You should be able to go to Tools>Application Manager and see them there. Click Options>Remove to uninstall it. Somtimes if the theme is installed on the Memory Card, you might need to use another method. I always recommend installing all applications and themes on the Phone Memory.

Hopefully I helped you out. Leave your reply below

Hi, there, Mike,

Thanks for your reply. :)

I have been to the dealer and I was told that they might have to replace the key pad for me. Knowing that this happens to a lot of N82 phones, it actually did make me feel somewhat alright.

The themes can only be deleted only if I reformat my phone. So, there, I will have to be very careful in selecting the themes that I would like to have in my phone in the future.

Thanks for helping me out, Mike. Have a great day. :)

Hi Mike, I just got the N82 a couple of weeks ago and I'm having probs getting online and browsing. The only website that seems to open is msn.com. I am using my wireless connection at home. I don't know what the problem is. If you could be of any help, I'd really appreciate it!

Mike said...

@ kaye,
I really hope the dealer replaces your whole phone, and pressures nokia to fix this problem. These things really need to be built better. About the themes, I still don't see why you can't delete them. I have no problem deleting mine.

@ masriya,
That's a really odd problem, especially since your using your wireless connection at home. Your able to access any website on your home computer right? What happens when you try to load another website? It just doesn't load at all? Do you get an error? Is your homes connection high speed or dial up? Is your phone branded to a carrier?

masriya said...

Hey Mike, thanks for the quick response!
I'm on my home computer as I type right now and I can access almost any website unless it's inappropriate because it's blocked by the provider. I live in the Middle East and we have ADSL here.
When I try to connect to yahoo.com for example, it says 0kB and it doesn't ever load. The connection error I typically get is "web connection timed out" or "no gateway reply."
For some reason, msn.com always loads but I cannot link up to hotmail.
I hope you can help me out, it's really frustrating!
Thanks again!

Hey Mike

I've wanted a N82 since its release, but now with the black version coming April 3rd, I'm planning on that. Do you think that the symbian Feature Pack will be the 2nd, newer version? Or at least downloadable for Feature Pack 1 phones? An input would be greatly appreciated.

Stupid question maybe, The default web browser on the N82.. I need to press the equivalent of the Enter button on a PC keyboard.. is there an equivalent on the N82 browser?

I need it for stuff like password entering but no clickable 'Send' button - where the enterkey on the PC would send the info after typing it in the box.

Many thanks indeed!

hi very soon iam moving to canada
and i wanna know if i can use hspda, with rogers?
thanks

Mike said...

no, the hspda 3g only works on European bands. i'm hoping they come out with a North America version, but it's start to look dim.

Anonymous said...

> @ anonymous
> that's a really good question, i'm not sure there is a way to do this. i haven't seen a website that doesn't

>have a "send" button. give me an example I'll see what I can find.

Hi Mike, If you have a facebook account for example (only one I can remember at the mo) If you was to update your status, you type in the box but there is no [OK] to click, (where as hitting enter on the PC keyboard would accept) clicking outside the box does not accept it..

The other one (www.bloomberg.com) top middle of page there is a 'Bloomberg Anywhere' clickable link. In this you enter username & password, but again there is no [OK] button so I can't get past this screen.

Good luck in finding away & Cheers for investigating!

Hi Mike,
I am a guy from germany and just got my N82 since yesterday. This is my first Symbian. Do you have an idea how i can get these emoticons in my messages? My girlfriend bombs me with them and all these dots and dashes are running me wild. Thanks and greetings to the californian sun.

mike said...

hey hows it going. congrats on your first symbian device. unfortunately, emoticons are not built into Nokia Nseries phones. you can try a 3rd party solution which you have to pay for, but there is a 2 day trial. i really can't believe this feature isn't built into these phones.
you can try installing this application
http://www.myasms.net/index.php

the california sun is shining today! it's about 77 degrees out here. hows the weather in germany? my friends tell me it's a beautiful place. and the beer is always flowing!

Hi mike,
this is also my very first time to change a phone from 3315 to n82 and my first symbian and the first smartphone...lol...everything first for me. i would like to ask how to set a ringtone specifically for a contact? is there any dsoftware needed to do this??? i found some software that can even set a video for a specific caller.

Mike said...

congrats on your first s60 phone. it's a good first. how are you liking it so far?

to assign a ringtone to a contact, you don't need anymore software.

How to assign ringtones to contacts on N82 -
1. go into contacts. select the caller.

2. push options, go down till you see ringtone. then select your tone. you should be able to choose any song or sound on your whole phone/memory card.

a video assigned to a caller should also be available without 3rd party software. look under your options for that as well.

Hi, I have got a problem with the N82. I can fully utilize my wireless network, no problem. I only can't access any printer (wireless) The n82 doesn't detect any...My E51 hasn't got any problems because there you can just assign all the details your self. Any idea how tackle this?
Thanks!

Anonymous said...

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your help! I´ll try the solution and will have a look for some other software - Symbian is really great. Yes, Germany is a beautiful place to live, I like it ...but the damn cold weather, actually 43 degrees and stormy. Here are some brands of beer you should try: Krombacher, Warsteiner and Veltins. Have a nice time - I will dive now into my N82!

Hello,
I had a very simple question about the N82. First of all great phone, worth every penny that i spent on it.

However, i noticed that on the new themes that was posted on the blog, there were option of viewing notes on the active stand by screen. I searched every where online, and on my phone but could not figure out how to do that.

If you could help me customize the active standby screen, that would be great.

I'm not talking about the applications, but rather the plugins like: WIFI, Calender, Search Content

Thank you

Mike said...

Burakfb,

there are not many options for the active stanby screen. there aren't any plugins that you can install on the standby screen. if you have active stanby on, it will display all the shortcut apps you choose, the wifi options, search, and calendar entries. those notes you see in those theme screenshots are not in fact notes, they are "memos" that you can make in the calendar application. All meetings, to-do notes, and memos from the calendar will appear on the standby screen.

to turn all this off you go into the settings and turn off active standby.

did this help you out? like i said, there are not many options with active standby plugins.

Burakfb said...

mike thanks for the help
greatly appreciate it, i guess the plugin option exists on the e series phones rather the n series, but as long as i see tasks and to-do information, i'm good

thanks again

are you having any problems connecting to other hotspots? is your phone seeing the router at all? what brand is your router?

to the person w/ the wireless printer problem,

i can't help you i don't have any experience with a wireless printer. maybe you should head over to the everything n82 forums, they might be able to help.

Hello Mike,

I'm Martin and I have had my N82 for a month or 2, and I love it!! My question is, on the themes that have redeisgned icons, why is it that the Music icon in the main menu never changes? I kind of ruins the look of themes, especially ones like "Flawed", all nice white icons then the standard beige folder for Music!
Any ideas?
Cheers! :)

Mike said...

wow akaash thats a terrible problem. i have no idea what's going on with that, you might want to take your question over to the S60 forums over at www.howardforums.com, as i've never seen that before.

to martin,
i don't know why the music icon is never redesigned. I've never seen this icon except on the n82. it's not present on the n95, at least the one i had. maybe the developer of the themes aren't using a nokia n82 so haven't noticed it. i agree it throws off the menu. i don't know any workaround. are you liking that theme? i think it looks great on the n82

Hello Mike

I use Google Calendar alot. I can view it on my N82 by surfing to googles homepage and that works kind of ok. BUT! I want to be able to add meetings etc. from my phone and have it sync perfectly with Google Calendar. How can I do this in the best way?
Best regards,
Martin

Mike said...

@ anonymous about the standby screen,
this is one of the downfalls of S60. you can't remove any of those shortcuts unless you disable active standby competely. this will also remove the six shortcut applications, but you can then customize the d-pad for shortcuts. i've complained to nokia about this many times.

@ the duck,
did you install them on your memory card or phone memory. i hope that you installed them on your phone memory, i've recommended it multiple times here at the blog. there is a way to get them off your memory card, but it's a pain in the ass. i'll find the tutorial on a friends blog and post about it today.

@ kashmir,
yes a hard reset will do the trick, but i'm not sure if you'll use your 3 month license for nokia maps. i hope you don't. good luck.

@ martin. there is an application i believe called calsync. you can try and search for it. it's brand new and has a few bugs. i'm gonna play with it more today and make an article about it hopefully by tonight. let us know if you find it.

there is also an application for any phones called gcalsync. it's not meant specifically for the n82, but might help do the trick. it's also a little buggy. i personally wouldn't recommend it, but you can give it a try. www.gcalsync.com

hope that helped, and lookout for an article about this issue soon.

I just tried remote controlling my N82 with a wiimote :-) nGage and all.

Thanks to: http://mobi-pad.com/

This would be very handy combined with a decent presentation viewer. I just tried the builtin quickofficeI just tried th ppt viewer, but was very disappointed. A test ppt from openoffice impress, was messed up. There was no option for automatically scaled fullscreen.
Does anyone have any experince with presentation formats, eg. pdf, ppt, odp?

Hi Mike,

2 newbie Qs:

1.How do I show the digital clock and the full date on my main screen?
I am using the network operator time? On analog it shows the day.

2. On the call log, it does not show from what number a person called from if its in my address book and the icon is always the same, how do u see from which number they called (office,home,cell...)?

Thanks, Oli

Anonymous said...

more info to previous Q1:

my digital clock shows the time and in the "middle" AT&T and underneath my profile name.

I have seen sceenshots of the N82 screen where it shows the date instead of the profile name, but where do I set that?

Claudio said...

Hello Mike!

First and foremost, congratulations for the great job you are doing to the N82 users community, you really have the patient to tamper with anything concerning the N82 and help the users that visit your website, that is admirable.

My question is simple: I bought the N82 from the States but I live in Europe. The charger is in the american format, and I can buy an AC-4, which is compatible with the N82, but I don't know if the AC-4 is slower than the AC-5, or if it is just about the size.

Have you tried these two chargers and/or do you know if the speed of charge is the same in both cases or not?

Thank you in advance and keep doing like until know, you are an excellent person and are doing a great job!

Happy Easter.

Mike said...

@thomas. thats awesome you go your wiimote to control your phone. insane what these things can do. sorry i don't have any experience with office programs.

@ oli and anonymous about the date. you control analog or digital in the clock application. if you want the date to be shown, you must have your phone set to the "general" profile. any others it will show the profile name instead. no way around it. as for the call log, it's a bug in symbian s60 that they've had for awhile and just haven't fixed it. its on all s60 phones.

@ claudio,
happy easter to you pal. thanks for the kind words about this site. glad you enjoy it. about the chargers, i have no idea. i live in the states and never been to europe. sorry i can't help you there. you might want to ask someone at www.everythingn82.com

Hi all. When I turn on my N82 it tries immediately to connect to internet and then it keeps trying all the time. Does anyone know if there is an application that can help me detect which program is trying to access internet?

When I use the task manager it has two apps: "Stand by" and "Phone", but after some time apparently "Phone" disappears but it seems to me that the icon is behind the "Stand by" icon.

Another question: Do you know if there is any app that can let me program my N82 to turn on and off at established times of the day?

Thanks so much!!.

Mike said...

gregorio,
for your internet problem what might be happening is your email. do you have automatic retrieval set up for your email. if so everytime you turn on your phone it will check it. to end the connection hold down the end key for 3 seconds.

no idea if there is an app that turns your phone on and off automatically but that would be cool. sorry.

Hello Mike, greetings from Greece!
I just bought my N82 and when i turned it on, (i was too anxious to wait!!!) without the sim card inserted, it didn't ask for a sim card. It just got lighted up.Strange,no???

Hi again.

I have 2 questions.

If i'll buy N82 from Europe (Czech Republic) is it going to be made in Finland? or Made by Nokia? I want to purchase Made in Finland or Germany version. and how about yours? and is it working fine?

In here, in Mongolia there are lots of N82 that were imported from Hong Kong.

I have heard that LCD's brightness in N82 is lower than the N85 8GB. Is it true? They said that Made by Nokia version is lower than the Finland ver. Maybe it was due to software that controls battery management.

Thank you

Anonymous said...

First, thanks for answering these questions.

I currently have an old Nokia 6682 phone and am thinking of upgrading to a N95 8GB or Nokia N82.

1. Nokia USA tells me that the screen rotation on the N82 will not work browsing the internet, although, I've seen demos on the internet showing this. Nokia did confirm that the N95 has screen rotation

Should I believe what I see or listen to the reps at Nokia?

2. I have AT and T.... is there truly a US phone version now and will it work seamlessly with my AT and T service if I pop my sim card in.

3. Will I notice a significant upgrade in phone usability if I go to the N82 or N95 and is it worth the money?

4. Will my portable SU-8W bluetooth keyboard that Nokia sells, work with the N82 or N95.

Mike said...

@ kherlen
i'm not sure where the phone will be made. my n82 is working great. the brightness is also weaker than then n95's. this can and hopefully will be fixed with a firmware update.

@ anonymous
the n82's auto screen rotation works great with the web browser. in fact it works in every application except ngage and the homescreen.

any n82 version will work seemlessly with american at&t. thats what i am using and i have the european version. just pop in your sim and everything will be set up. you will love upgrading the to this phone and it is very much so worth the money. do you take lots of pictures. if you do than this phone is great, if not then you'll find yourself suddenly taking lots of pictures.

yes that bluetooth keyboard will work just install the drivers for the nokia n73. it will work perfectly.

hope i answered you questions correctly and keep them coming

Anonymous said...

Mike,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Couple of more questions on the N82:

I see it takes a micro sd card... is there a limit of 2GB? Not clear on Nokia's web site

Also, did I read correctly that the N82 does not have a speakerphone?

If you had to choose between the N95-3, N82 or N81, which phone would you choose? I don't like problems with my phones and see that a lot of people have posted them on your site. A friend of mine has the N76 phone and had nothing but trouble from day one.

Finally, do you have a comment on the E-90?

Mike said...

no the limit is 32gb, but right now nobody has made one bigger than 8gb. i use a 4gb in mine.

out of those three i would choose the nokia n82. i love the form factor, its solid with no moving parts. the camera software is faster and the xenon flash is the best. i've never used a e90. the n82 does in fact have a crystal clear speakerphone.

Anonymous said...

Mike,

Thanks for the information.

The only reason I ask about the memory on the N82 is that it only has 100 MB, internally and that initially concerned me compared to the N95's - 8 GB; however, I don't think you can add memory to that phone?

So, if I understand you correctly, the largest memory card you could technically put in an N82 is a 32 GB SD card, but, the largest one currently made is an 8GB and I imagine that a 4 GB would be fine for me to start off with. If I intend to use this as a secondary camera to my 8.1 megapixel Panasonic, I wanted to make sure that I had enough memory to store the pictures. Just how much control do you have with that camera? I don't think it would be a match for my Panasonic, but, maybe I'm wrong.

How easy is it to transfer and download pictures from the camera do the desktop... just use PC suite, etc. Or I suppose, I can remove the memory card and put in my card reader?

Yes, I agree with you that the lack of moving parts and the Xenon flash and the automatic screen rotation are all very appealing features of the N82.

I've been pretty well served by my Nokia 6682 phone except that I cannot send e-mail attachments using Quick Office with my series 60, 2nd edition version and this is frustrating. I hope to be able do that with the upgraded version.

Also, thanks for clarifying the speakerphone issue.. if you go to Nokia's USA web site and compare phones, the N82's listing for a "yes" under speaker phone is conspicuously absent.

Have you had a good experience with the camera features?

By the way, I've had such a good experience with Nokia and the Symbian platform, that I dismissed the idea of getting an iphone... is that a mistake?

The iphone has some serious limitations in my opinion although I must admit the Safari browser on that phone seems to outshine all others. Would you agree with that?

your right the iphone does have some serious limitations and i wouldn't recommend if you enjoy taking "on the spot" when you don't have your panasonic. look at the post i made today about photo sharing. the pictures in the slideshow came out great. you can click one to view them on the ovi site.

there are many ways to transfer the images to your desktop. i'll list them for you...

1. card reader. pop out your microsd card and use a card reader. this is the fastest way.

2. pc suite. you can use the data cable that comes with your phone and nokia pc suite will load them up for you automatically into folders labeled by date. if you want you can make it erase the photos on your phone once they are on your computer to ensure plenty of space on your memory card. you can also use this method over bluetooth and set it up to automatically start checking for new images on your phone and transfer them over bluetooth when you get home. all you have to do is walk in the door and process will start as long as your and your computers bluetooth is on and pc suite is running in the background. you can eat dinner and watch tv and not even notice its hapening.

3. mass storage mode. if you have 100's of pictures and dont have a card reader you can use mass storage mode over the data cable and its faster than pc suite.

4. send your photos to flickr or ovi.com and they are stored there.

a 4gb card is perfect for you. i have 2 gigs of music one of video and one of pictures. the 8gbs you can find on ebay now for around $60 not bad huh?

the camera has lots of settings to play with. iso, timer, sequence mode, exposure compensation, white balance, color tone and a bunch of presets that are awesome.

if your in the market for a camera phone, the n82 is the best. faster and better pictures than the n95. the n82 will have location tagging via gps built into the phone so the coordinates are marked on the jpeg data. you can than easily upload the pictures to a map like i did in the post today that i made.

the n82's browser is made with the same safari coding and also can load just about any website. with the next firmware update you will have flash enabled in the browser. youtube, google video, espn.com videos, everything with flash will work on the browser.

Hi. I'm thinking of making the jump from WM to Symbian specifically for the N82's camera. Just have one question. I live and die by the calendar sync with Outlook. WM is a lot of things but the good thing is the calendar works great. My friend had a SE K790 and couldn't get the calendar to sync recurring meetings correctly. Specifically, if you changed one instance of a recurring meeting (not the whole series) the calendar on the phone wouldn't update that one meeting. Does the N82 have problems with syncing recurring meetings? That would be a deal breaker for me. Thanks.

paul, i don't have much experience with syncing outlook and the n82. you might want to visit Howard Forums and ask this question. it's a great community over there. i came from windows mobile as well and i've never looked back. s60 has so many features and 3rd party options. and the n82's camera has replaced my digital camera for everyday snapshots.

Hi Mike,
I'm a longtime S60 user-I switched to an N82 from an N73, and the biggest thing I miss from my old phone is the dictionary key. Earlier it was very easy to multi-select a bunch of items (SMSes, emails, photos, contacts etc) and do something with them(delete or move or whatever).

Is there any way to select multiple items or have I got to painstakingly choose options-mark items-mark for each item?

@ anonymous... i have no idea why you can't text.

@ rex... your solution is the # key.

Hi Mike

I've got a little thing that is annoying me with my N82, and my wife has the same issue with her N81. I got my N82 a few weeks ago on the O2 network, and all is brilliant, except for the function of one button. The selection/shortcut button above the cancel key starts up the internet, and I keep accidently pressing it, which connects me to the internet. Occasionally I don’t realise I have done it and can be connected for a while, which could end up costing me valuable £'s. Is there anyway to change the function of this key? I have looked around on the net, in the manual, and just by playing around with the phone, but can’t see a way to change it. You’re help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hi kungfunun,
You can customize the shortcut keys displayed. Open the option menu, then go to Tools-Settings-General-Personalization-
Standby Mode. Here you can choose either Active Standby (where there are 6 shortcuts displayed in standby mode) or turn it off, to look like older s60 phones. There's a shortcuts menu here where you can change the action assigned to the 2 soft keys.

I sync my N82 with a mac but on the standby screen instead of seeing todays items from the calendar, I get tomorrows, is there anything I can do to change this so I see todays and maybe tomorrows too?

Why has O2 withdrawn the N82 from sale on its website?
